The Power family loves to sing. They particularly like to transform the Word of God into hymns, in order to meditate while singing and to sing while meditating. During their family time, on winter evenings together or during those long fun-filled summer picnics, Teresa began to compose hymns and songs and everyone pitched in with suggestions and vocal arrangements. Later, Clare also took up the art of composition and worked closely with her Mum to develop the music and songs.
The hymns written by the Power Family are short meditations taken from the Bible and set to music. They are very easy to sing and to play. Because they are completely biblical, they are suitable for liturgical contexts as well as meetings and retreats etc. And although they are in no way childish, their simplicity makes them easy to learn and to sing, for example at mass and in groups where children participate.
What happens when we speak with the Lord using His own Word as our source? What happens when we read the Gospel, not as the narrator of a story but as someone who is present in an actual meeting with Jesus? What happens when Jesus sits down at our well, or when He calls our name to come down from the sycamore tree where we’re hiding, or when He lets us wash His feet with our tears? What happens when the sea parts in front of us, here and now? Let’s sing and find out!
Right now the hymns are all in Portuguese. Clare is already working on some music in English that we hope she’ll be able to record once her exams are over this summer. We always put the music up on this webpage in three formats so that everyone can join in, independently of their knowledge of music. So you’ll find the lyrics and guitar chords to download as a PDF; the sheet music can be downloaded in PDF for those who read music; and finally, you can learn the melodies from the mp3 files that are also available here.
Sofia Portela, a generous and talented young musician from the Movement wrote the sheet music and arrangements for each song. Sofia also coordinated all the recordings at a studio that was kindly made available to us by Ricardo Ribeiro and his family, close neighbours of the Power family. On guitar are Sofia Portela and Francisco Power. On mandolin is Clare Power and on violin Raquel Duarte. Sofia Portela, again, is on keyboards. All four musicians are joined by Maria Roque on vocals. And guiding the musicians are two goals: to give glory to God and to make it possible for everyone to learn the hymns and songs. Please join in and sing along too!
